Best Places to Elope in Texas

When you’re sitting down and dreaming up amazing places to elope, Texas probably isn’t the first place that comes to your mind. BUT Texas has some of the most beautiful and diverse landscapes and since it’s not on everyone’s radar permits are much easier to come by. These are my favorite places to elope in the Lone Star State.

Big Bend National Park

8 hours from Dallas and 7 hours from Austin, Big Bend is probably the most popular elopement location in Texas. With over 1200 square miles of incredible scenery, there is something for everyone. Big Bend is actually larger than Yosemite and sees far fewer visitors making it a fantastic place to elope. It’s even a certified clear sky for that late spring stargazing! Elopement permits are required to help ensure that no one else is getting married at the same time and place as you so be sure to secure that well in advance! Don’t forget to check out texascamelcorps.com for an awesome elopement day activity as well as the town of Terlingua for some completely unique stays!

Palo Duro Canyon State Park

6 hours north of Dallas and 30 min north of Amarillo, Palo Duro Canyon is the second largest canyon in the United States! With its beautiful red dirt and iconic lighthouse rock it’s a unique place to elope. If you are eloping on public land be sure to obtain a special use permit for your elopement. Also, be aware that day passes and cabins can book up far in advance so make sure you plan ahead with this one! There are some super cool places to glam in the surrounding areas and lots of unique and secluded places to say your vows. Remember to Leave No Trace as you enjoy this red desert

Guadalupe Peak National Park

While Big Bend is the famous Texas National Park, Guadalupe Peak also provides some incredible views. Guadalupe Peak is home to the highest point in Texas. Located about 8 hours away from Dallas and home to a pretty strenuous hike the views at the top are incredible. The hike itself, its pretty steep and can take about 3 hours one way so plan in advance if you are wanting sunset pictures at the top! This is a national and note a state park so it does require a wedding permit. Wedding permits are actually super beneficial for both parties as it insures that no one else is trying to elope at the same place on the same day as you and ensures that you can have a private ceremony!

Monahans Sandhills State Park

Located 6 hours west of Dallas Monahans Sandhills is probably one of my favorite elopement locations. It looks so other worldly I cant believe its located in Texas! Its a bit of a drive but completely worth it. The park is even open until 10pm so you can stargaze. It requires a special use permit to elope and the park does charge a daily entrance fee. So take your shoes off, wax your sand boards, and head on out to this prime desert elopement spot!

Chapel Dulcenia

Located in Austin Chapel Dulcinea is a popular elopement location. Advertised as a free wedding venue they simply ask for a $200 dollar donation to keep the property running. While there is no waitlist, their calendar is updated to the most recent bookings and they have many different ceremony times per day. They even have a reception room available for rent if you would prefer an intimate ceremony but still want to celebrate with a bigger crowd. The only thing to note is it is outside in Texas so the summers could get really hot.

Galveston Beach

If you are wanting a simple beach elopement, Galveston can be a good option! Just an hour south of Houston Galveston is the closest beach for many Texans making it a great place for an oceanside elopement. There are even some off-the-beaten-path beaches that are much less crowded, perfect for your intimate ceremony. Bring the whole family and rent an Airbnb for a sunrise elopement on the beach.  Don’t forget to grab some fresh seafood at Gaidos! No permits needed if you are getting married at a private residence & Beach! If you are getting married on public land then a special use permit does need to be obtained.

Devil’s River Natural Area

About 5 hours west of Austin,  Devil’s River is a beautiful and relatively remote place to Elope. A gorgeously well maintained river with waterfalls and towering cliffs, the river is just a 1 mile hike from the parking lot. If you love kayaking, paddle boarding, or want to take a wedding day swim this place would be perfect! It requires a special use permit as well as aa day pass for $7 and they are (rightfully) pretty strict about Leave no Trace and packing out!

Enchanted Rock State Park

About 2 hours west of Austin, and 45 min north of the adorable wine town of Fredericksburg,  Enchanted Rock is a great place to elope. If you want the stunning views from the top of the rock, its a moderate hike. If you prefer a less strenuous day, or want to include your pets, the outer loop has some great views of the rock as well. It requires both a photography and elopement permit so make sure to apply ahead of time!

Dinosaur Valley State Park

Just an 1.5 hours south of Dallas, Dinosaur Valley is a great place if you are wanting to Elope and are looking for a bit more scenery. With varying levels of hiking trails, a beautiful river, lots of fun outdoor activities and the adorable town of Glen Rose its a great place to Elope. It requires a special use permit as well as a simple day fee of $7 per person. Don’t forget to eat at the Loco Coyote Grill!

Cedar Hill State Park

Located in South Dallas, Cedar Hill State Park is a great place if you are wanting to Elope but don’t want to travel very far. With easy hiking trails and lake access its the perfect place for your simple Dallas elopement. It requires a special use permit as well as a simple day fee of $7 per person.
